New Construction
19six Architects and staff of the Oceano Community Center worked closely with County Supervisors, State Parks and Recreation Dept., school administrators, parents, and the community as a whole to determine the needs of the community. The 15,160 square foot facility houses the community center offices, space for community meetings and gatherings with an adjoining performance platform, and a regulation size recreational gym for youth and adult league sports. In addition, an outdoor amphitheater connected to the full-service kitchen accommodates a wide variety of community events.
The building is oriented to take advantage of the sun for natural daylighting and ocean breezes for natural ventilation. The roof holds a 38kw photovoltaic system that supplies 10% of annual power needs for the facility. Other sustainable elements include a facility-wide Energy Management System, light shelves to enhance natural daylighting in the gymnasium, sensor controls on lavatories to reduce water usage, occupancy sensors for light control in all spaces, and drought-tolerant landscaping.
